8 switches (Part 6)

With 8 Switches, Tim Wright presents six black-and-white microcinematic vignettes of retina-searing, hard-edged, epilepsy-inducing sound and vision; digital hallucinations drained of colour, synchronized to a soundtrack that is relentless and unsentimental. Each new section presents a variation on the same sleek, kinetic minimalism. As each section progresses, the razor-sharp line between a host of binary oppositions—black/white, figure/ground, silence/sound, here/there, on/off — dissolves through sheer velocity. The rapid-fire alternation between these binary oppositions acts like the flicker of film frames, accelerating until sound and sight are wed into a synchronous whole in which neither the visual nor the sonic takes primacy. Instead, each acts as mutually constitutive literalisation of the other. — Joseph Clayton Mills

Written in Ink

The main protagonist is a homeless, alcoholic living in the dregs of society. He is a tattoo enthusiast, with almost all of his body covered in ink. Each tattoo resembles a different story, of which there were many. Despite the uneasy position he finds himself in, he is trying to take his life in his own hands once again and make up for the wrong he did in the past. After many years apart he is trying to reconnect with his siblings. Although his sister ignores his telephone calls and his brother doesn’t want to speak with him, he doesn’t give up hope that something may still change in his life. Martin Rath’s beautifully shot documentary shows how difficult it is to erase from memory what has already happened in the past by revealing how deeply each and every new experience marks one’s life.

Nearby, a beautiful ornithologist, in nocturnal pursuit of the Screech Owl, is disturbed in her hide by a couple of noisy hikers. A Chinese shop, a slot machines and a political party office can also be found here. The building is a microcosm intruded by the constant anticipation of change.
