‘Lady Day’ was one of the greatest jazz vocalists the world ever heard. In 1971, journalist Linda Lipnack Kuehl set out to write the definitive biography of Billie Holiday. Before her mysterious death in 1978, Lipnack Kuehl had taped over 200 hours of interviews. The tapes have never been heard. Now they form the basis of an atmospheric, multi-layered documentary that captures the many complex facets of a proud black woman, violent drug addict, loyal friend, vindictive lover and unforgettable singer of ‘God Bless The Child’, ‘Saddest Tale’ and the haunting ‘Strange Fruit’.

Curtain Up! follows elementary school kids in New York’s Chinatown as they prepare for a production and begin to discover themselves. Behind the scenes, they face families’ expectations and uncertainties post-graduation. Interestingly, it is through rehearsing for this American favorite that these kids come to grapple with their Chinese roots.
Dimitra is a sex worker and president of her union for many years. She loves her work and had been the owner of one of the oldest brothels of Athens, known as ‘Elli’s brothel’. The film is a portrait of Dimitra, with the camera following her in her everyday life, before and after the brothel closed down in 2014. As we get to know her we are faced with questions of desire, exploitation, the right to otherness and political correctness.

Mstyslav was known in Kyiv. In 1991, when Ukraine gained independence, Mstyslav was so inspired that he grew a traditional Ukrainian mustache and went to streets with songs about Ukraine. He was screaming his songs for more than 20 years. He was singing badly, but from the bottom of the heart. In those songs, the enemies of Ukraine were dying in terrible torments. He was badly adapted, unprotected and sincere. He got coins from passers-by, threats and insults from cops and lumpens. On “weekends” he used to drink, read, stroll around, take part in patriotic song contests, travel across Ukraine and dream of being a movie star. After he died, it became clear that his life wasn’t schizophrenia but the beauty and the truth.

Daily life at Iran’s second biggest zoo is interrupted when Mohsen, the head keeper, takes Maya, his 4 year old Bengal tiger, to perform in a fiction film in the north of the country by the Caspian Sea which was once home to the now extinct caspian tiger. In between filming, Mohsen lets Maya off the leash and allows her to roam in this sparsely populated landscape – she is the first ‘free’ tiger in Iran in over 60 years. But instead of the perfect experience of the wild that Mohsen hopes it to be, the trip kickstarts a series of events that mark the end of Mohsen and Maya’s relationship and in the process reveals a much darker and more complex side to Mohsen and the Zoo in which Maya and the other animals are kept.
Against a collage of excerpts that span thirty-four films, a filmmaker reflects on the community he has built over more then a decade of low-budget movie making in Oklahoma City.

From the outside it may seem like they are lazy or idle and not deserving of help. However without support they are deprived of the human right to enable them to be part of society. Cripplewas commissioned by Phoenix as part of Idle Index, which invites artists to create screensaver works. The work uses several passages from Frances Ryan’s \"Crippled\" (2019, Verso Books).

Eddie Martinez is a dancer for Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. In 2009 Pina returned to Chile for her last residency before her passing that June. Eddie and I have continued our friendship ever since bonded by our love for Pina. In 2016, we collaborated on a short dance film. I told Eddie how I wanted to dance with the camera while he moved in the waters of Castle Island, MA. The film was shown as a 16mm projected loop for an expanded cinema event at the Boston Waterworks Museum. After that event I digitized the work print projected that night and created Temple Island, an ode to the body as our motor and our temple.

In October 2004, two cave divers and long-time friends, Don and Dave, dive in Boesmansgat, a mythical cave in South Africa. Dave was breaking a world record for depth. It would take them 15 minutes to reach the bottom, but 12 hours to surface. Once he touched bottom, against all odds, Dave finds a body. The two friends decide to come back and retrieve it. They call the parents, enroll 8 support divers, and hire a cameraman to document the historic dive in its entirety – from the preparation on the surface to the operation at the bottom of the cave. Little did they know that, from that dive, Dave would not be coming back. In a time of over-performance driven by self-promotion and self-filming, Dave Not Coming Back is a story of loss and mourning where ego and altruism, hubris and self-control, risk-taking and spirituality all go hand in hand. A chain of paradoxical choices that lead to a tragedy long foreseen, yet impossible to prevent.

Climate change has reached the indigenous Nenets people in the north of Siberia. The nomads' herds of reindeer move on thin ice. The warming in the Russian Arctic is becoming dramatically visible.
