A Man Who Was Superman

SONG Soo-jung is a producer going on her third year at a small company. Her specialty is human interest stories. She is driven to produce these shallow stories for the sake of her ambition of one day becoming Korea’s own Oprah Winfrey. However, she is reaching the end of what’s left of her pride. One day, after months of not getting paid, she leaves her office with the company camera to produce a story on a lion apparently refusing to eat its meal. On her way, however, she comes across a robber, but she is saved somehow by Superman in a Hawaiian shirt. “Superman” claims he’s unable to tap into his supernatural powers as the bad guys have placed kryptonite inside his head. However, he doesn’t let that get in his way from helping others, from saving the world from global warming to saving a lost puppy.

NOT STILL

NOT STILL forms an abstract visual landscape in shades of monochrome colors, from green to red, in which found footage on celluloid flares up like a quotation from the nether world. Alienated classical film scores howl in NOT STILL’s minimalist techno soundscape, overlapping with the main motif of the record in all of its varied visual structures. VJ Roisz mistreats this just as uninhibitedly as the DJ mistreats his records. Roisz shows brief shots of film macros, tracks of animated films and a horror movie, to then unexpectedly have the leaping picture strip swallow them again. As though in a séance in all degrees of its intensity, flaring up are scraps of memory of a pop culture media history. NOT STILL enacts a clash of media in gruesome disquiet and poetic ambiance.

Not Straight Forward

Jenny Ting follows bon-vivant Tan Vo on ten dates with ten Seattle women. Get up-close and personal with Tan, a self-proclaimed butch virgin, as she turns on the charm for a variety of gals-taking them to restaurants, going for long walks on the beach, and even bringing them back to her apartment. Almost a primer for lesbian dating, this film reveals how different women interact on first dates: they talk about their goals and desires, the characteristics that are important to them in potential girlfriends and all the important details about sex. The viewer gets to be a fly on the wall, with full access to these dates and their intimate discussions, while being challenged to confront your own preconceived notions and misconceptions about lesbians and lesbian dating. This movie expresses what it means to be a lesbian who's part of a proud, diverse community with people who have so much to say and give to the world, even if at times it doesn't appear the world is willing to accept them.
